I’ve been thinking about Microsoft’s decision to delay their followup to Windows XP until 2006. Now, this really isn’t a big deal, as I’m using OS X. But what this means to me, as a freelance network admin, is that it probably won’t be until 2007-08 until a system I control, has that update.
Most of my clients still run Windows 98. They’re not in a hurry to upgrade, as their computers still run the programs. I’m always a little cautious about updating as soon as Windows (or even OS X) has been updates. I’m always one point behind the lastest editions, mainly because on a production system, major f-ups can ruin projects.
