The recent announcement of LiveJournal being purchased by SixApart , has some people reacting like it’s the end of the world….you know, the four horsemen of the apocalypse….cats & dogs living together, etc. And quite honestly, even though I’m not a major user of Movable Type anymore, I think they’ve done something that is more of a move for the weblog community as a whole than just a business move to one-up a Google or a Microsoft.
Think about it. Here is a business that effectively started less than 5 years ago and has become, in the blogging world at least, a if not THE major player. Which, is a direct competitor of Microsoft, Google, and AOL…some of the largest companies, financially, in the world. All this from a Husband and Wife, two of the sweetest people around….who I’ve asked many of questions when I was making Erlanger’s site one of the first to use Movable Type in a non-blogging situation.
As a whole, you have bloggers investing in bloggers. The board of SA decided to purchase LiveJournal. That’s feeding our (now) successful community. You can put a face on either company, and you can see how they believe in this community. It’s gonna be a great partnership, even though originally I believed the rumors were bunk…”I don’t see why they would they purchase LiveJournal” kept going through my head. But the more I thought about it, the more I came to the mindset that [this is good].
